The Acorn Club

Tandem fit arbor, part of The Acorn Club logo, refers to the acorn “eventually becoming a tree.” A fitting logo for our private women‘s city club located in the heart of Philadelphia — a place for women of all ages to learn, grow, share, and celebrate. The Club is a favorite meeting place for members and their guests — providing the comfort and privacy of a home amidst a lively city.

Located in the scenic Rittenhouse Square district, the Club exists for the “promotion of literary, musical and artistic tastes and for social enjoyments and such other kindred purposes as the Club may from time to time determine.” An accomplished and dynamic membership of nearly 700 keeps The Acorn Club a place of community and kinship. With a devoted staff, premier dining and a full schedule of social programming, The Acorn Club has established itself as an elegant private women's club.

The Club has outstanding works of fine art throughout its 22,000 square foot clubhouse. Step into the lobby and you are surrounded by picturesque Zuber Cie wall panels of American landscapes. Additional Zuber Cie panels can be found in other locations throughout the Club.

  • Club History
    • The Acorn Club has the honor of being the first women’s club in the country. It was founded in 1889 and owed its conception to a walking club - The Outing Club.

At its inception the club had eight charter members. Located at 1519 Locust Street, its residence for over 50 years, the Club provides a gracious and welcoming environment in Center City Philadelphia. The first meeting room was a house on Pine Street and the first clubhouse was located at 1504 Walnut Street. Architect Sydney Martin designed the present clubhouse built in 1956. "Vues d'Amerique Du Nord" (Scenes of North America) produced by Jean Zuber et Cie, adorns the first floor foyer and the rest of the clubhouse is beautifully decorated with art acquired over the past 100 years.

Founders of The Acorn Club felt confident that the club would continue to grow and develop with the times. The younger generations have fulfilled the founders’ vision for the club and continue to develop its culture and personality.
